Shoulder pain and rotator cuff care in Allentown

A shoulder that aches at night, catches when you reach overhead or will not let you lift your arm takes a lot out of a day. We treat the shoulder itself and the neck and upper back that feed it.

Shoulder Pain

What it feels like, and where it comes from

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, and that freedom comes at a price. The rotator cuff, the group of small muscles and tendons that hold the joint centered, is easy to irritate with repetitive overhead work, a fall, years of lifting or simply sleeping on the same side every night. Tendon irritation, bursitis and frozen shoulder all start to feel the same from the inside: a deep ache, a sharp catch and a shrinking range of motion.

Shoulder pain also has a habit of not being only about the shoulder. The neck and the upper back control how the shoulder blade moves, and when they are restricted the shoulder has to work at a bad angle. Dr. Petrilak examines the whole chain, which is one reason patients who have already tried treating the shoulder alone find a different result here.

  • Pain reaching overhead, behind your back or across your body
  • An ache in the shoulder that wakes you when you roll onto it
  • Weakness or a catch when lifting your arm
  • A shoulder that is slowly losing motion
  • Soreness after lifting, throwing, painting or overhead work
  • Pain that runs from the neck into the top of the shoulder
How We Help

Our approach to shoulder pain

StemWave for the tendons

Shoulder tendons and the rotator cuff are among the most common places StemWave acoustic wave therapy is used. It stimulates the body's own repair response in injured tissue with no injections and no surgery.

Restore motion above and below

Gentle Activator adjusting of the neck, upper back and shoulder joint itself so the shoulder blade can move properly and the cuff stops fighting a bad position.

An honest assessment

Some shoulders need an orthopedic opinion or imaging. Dr. Petrilak tells you plainly when that is the case rather than treating something that will not respond.

What to expect

The exam checks the shoulder's range of motion, strength of each rotator cuff muscle, and how the neck and upper back are moving. You will be shown what is restricted and why it matters.

Care usually combines StemWave sessions over the irritated tissue with gentle adjusting of the joints that are not moving well. Sessions are short. You can see what one looks like, filmed in our Allentown office, on our services page.

Patient Review

In their words

★★★★★

"When I started coming here I was in so much pain I could barely lift my arms. Dr. Alan was so nice, very informative, and explained everything he was doing. I am now pain free from my fibromyalgia flare ups and my sciatica is so much better. I would recommend this office to everyone. I trust him fully with my care."

Common Questions

Questions about shoulder pain

Straight answers to the questions we hear most. If yours is not here, call us and we will help.

Can a chiropractor help a rotator cuff problem?

Often, yes. Many rotator cuff problems are tendon irritation rather than a full tear, and they respond to care that calms the tissue and restores normal shoulder blade motion. StemWave therapy is used specifically for this kind of stubborn tendon pain. A complete tear is different and may need a surgeon, and the exam will tell us which you have.

What is StemWave and does it hurt?

StemWave is an acoustic wave treatment applied with a handheld applicator over the painful area. Most patients describe a tapping or pulsing sensation that is tender over the sore spot but easily tolerated. Sessions are short and there is no downtime.

How many StemWave sessions does a shoulder usually need?

It varies with how long the problem has been there. Dr. Petrilak will give you an estimate after your exam and adjust it based on how the shoulder responds. There is no set package to buy up front.

Why do you look at my neck when my shoulder hurts?

Because the nerves that run the shoulder come from the neck, and the muscles that position the shoulder blade attach to the neck and upper back. Treating the shoulder alone while the neck is restricted often gives only short-term relief.
