Arthritis and joint pain care in Allentown

Arthritis does not have to mean giving up the things you enjoy. Joints that keep moving hurt less than joints that stiffen, and gentle care can keep you moving.

Arthritis & Joint Pain

What it feels like, and where it comes from

Osteoarthritis is wear in the cartilage that cushions a joint. It most often shows up in the spine, hips, knees, hands and shoulders as stiffness in the morning, aching after activity and joints that feel tight or grind. It tends to progress slowly, and the stiffness itself becomes part of the problem: a joint that is not moved through its range gets stiffer and weaker, which makes it hurt more.

Chiropractic care does not reverse arthritis. What it does is address the parts that respond: the joint restriction, the muscle tension around the joint and the uneven loading that wears one spot faster than the rest. Gentle adjusting keeps motion in the joints that still move well, and StemWave therapy is used for the painful inflamed tissue around arthritic joints.

  • Morning stiffness that takes a while to loosen
  • Aching joints after activity or at the end of the day
  • Spine, hip, knee or shoulder joints that feel tight or grind
  • Loss of motion in a joint over months or years
  • Arthritis already seen on an X-ray
  • Pain that medication only partly controls
How We Help

Our approach to arthritis & joint pain

Gentle enough for arthritic joints

The Activator Method is a low-force instrument technique with no twisting. It is well suited to older adults and to joints that will not tolerate a forceful adjustment.

StemWave for inflamed tissue

StemWave acoustic wave therapy is used on the painful soft tissue around arthritic joints to stimulate the body's own healing response, without injections or medication.

Realistic, honest goals

The goal is more comfort and more motion, not a cure. Dr. Petrilak will tell you what he expects care to do for your joints and what it cannot.

What to expect

Dr. Petrilak will review any X-rays or reports you have and examine how each affected joint moves and how the joints around it are compensating. Many arthritis patients have more restriction in the neighboring joints than in the arthritic one itself.

Care is gentle and paced to how you respond. Many patients come periodically to stay loose and comfortable rather than on an intensive schedule. There is no forced long-term plan either way.

Common Questions

Questions about arthritis & joint pain

Straight answers to the questions we hear most. If yours is not here, call us and we will help.

Is chiropractic safe if I have arthritis?

With a low-force technique and a proper exam, yes. The Activator Method does not twist or force a joint, which is exactly why it is a good fit for arthritic spines and older adults. Conditions like severe osteoporosis or inflammatory arthritis flares are taken into account in the exam.

Can you fix my arthritis?

No, and anyone who says otherwise should be questioned. Cartilage wear is permanent. What we can address is the stiffness, muscle tension and uneven loading around the joint, which is where much of the day-to-day pain comes from.

Will StemWave regrow cartilage?

No. StemWave is used for the painful soft tissue and inflammation around a joint. Many arthritis patients find it helps them move more comfortably, and we are clear about its limits.

How often should an arthritis patient come in?

That depends on the joints involved and how you respond. Some patients benefit from an initial series followed by occasional visits to stay comfortable. Dr. Petrilak gives you a straight recommendation after the exam.
